COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Whitman College women’s basketball team closed its trip to Colorado with a cold shooting night, falling 53-39 to host Colorado College in the finale of the Colorado College Thanksgiving Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Morgan Montgomery again paced the Blues with 12 points, reaching double figures for the third straight game. Brianna Andrade chipped in nine points and a team-best six rebounds, and Emma Lena Baker added five points and six boards as well off the bench to help Whitman to a 39-38 rebounding edge.
Whitman (4-3) battled to a 20-20 tie at halftime, using an 11-7 second-quarter edge to erase an early eight-point deficit and briefly grab the lead. Colorado College responded after the break, outscoring Whitman 14-8 in the third quarter and 19-11 in the fourth to steadily pull away.
The Blues struggled to find rhythm offensively, shooting 14-59 from the field and 2-13 from beyond the arc. Whitman did much of its damage at the foul line, converting 9 of 13 free throws, but could not generate enough scoring in the half-court to keep pace late.
The Blues will have a quiet month of December with only two games, first at Walla Walla University on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
