CREVE COEUR, Mo. | Creve Coeur Soccer Complex – Third-seeded McKendree University women’s soccer (16-3-1, 10-3-1 GLVC) punched its ticket to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the two seed Drury on Thursday evening. The Bearcats fired two first-half goals to push the game out of reach as senior forward Lena Higgins and senior forward Anna Stiffler each fired scores. McKendree will return to Creve Coeur Soccer Complex in Creve Coeur, Missouri for the title match on Saturday, November 16 at 12:00PM against the fifth-seeded Tritons of Missouri-St. Louis.
The Bearcats and Panthers battled for the advantage early, with both squads getting chances over the opening sequences. McKendree then broke through in the 36th minute as Higgins got the dish-out from Stiffler inside the six-yard box. Higgins turned and fired it into the back of the net for the lead. Just over five minutes later, the Bearcats pushed their lead to two goals as Stiffler connected on a pass from freshman forward Maddie Mauch. Stiffler found the back of the net for the 15th time this season with the score. McKendree led 2-0 over the Panthers at the intermission period.
Drury pushed back with a goal in the 69th minute, but McKendree fought off the Panthers to hold the game at 2-1 and move into another championship game.
