UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall’s ongoing hiatus following multiple eye injuries continues as he underwent another major surgery.
Tom Aspinall continues to sit on the sidelines as he recovers from multiple eye injuries suffered against Ciryl Gane in their UFC 321 title fight. Months removed from the bout, Aspinall continues to suffer from severe vision issues that have indefinitely postponed his UFC heavyweight title reign.
As the UFC continues to wait for Aspinall to be medically cleared to compete, a potential interim heavyweight title bout has been tossed around by fans and pundits. If that comes to fruition, a fight between top contenders Ciryl Gane and Waldo Cortes-Acosta could be a possibility for an interim title fight.
In the meantime, Aspinall has apparently hit another speed bump in his recovery from multiple eye pokes at UFC 321. After undergoing multiple minor surgeries on his eyes, he underwent another surgery on his eyes last weekend in the UK.
Tom Aspinall undergoes another major eye surgery as UFC future remains uncertain
Aspinall’s eye surgeons, Optegra, shared a statement regarding his double eye operation.
“After his highly publicized eye poke injury, Optegra’s expert team is proud to have supported MMA fighter and UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall,” the statement read on Aspinall’s surgery.
“Over recent months, we’ve been working closely with him on his recovery. Following his operation on both eyes, we continue the journey to get Tom’s vision back to fighting fitness.”
Aspinall’s no-contest against Gane at UFC 321 came after a long wait by the UK star to potentially fight Jon Jones, a bout that never came to fruition following lengthy contract negotiations. Jones announced his retirement from MMA last June but remains hopeful about a potential return to the cage at the upcoming White House event.
