LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s tennis team defeated Miami (OH) 7-0 on Friday morning to move to 2-0 on the season, staying unbeaten in their rescheduled match. The Redhawks did not take a single set from the Wildcats all day, which helped Kentucky gain some momentum as they continue the start of the spring season.

To start off play, the Wildcats doubles matchup soared over Miami. The lone senior duo of Zoe Hammond and Ellie Myers picked up a decisive win on court three in their first match as a pair this season, 6-1. Court one followed suit, clinching the doubles point for the Wildcats in credit to sophomore Marina Fuduric and junior Julia Zhu. Deciding to play out doubles, Sophomore Asuncion Jadue and freshman Reese Sager swept the scene with 6-4 doubles win on court two.

With the 1-0 lead, Kentucky jumped out to another hot start, taking the first three matches in convincing fashion. Zhu beat Miami’s Faulkner 6-1, 6-1 thanks to her strong play and Sager followed that up quickly with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Redhawk opponent Valentinsson. Hammond picked up the third and clinching point for the match, as the Wildcats jumped ahead 4-0 thanks to her 6-2, 6-0 win over Oliveira.

With the clinch, both teams agreed to play out the remaining matches. Jadue, after trailing, extended the Wildcats lead, pulling the match off 7-5, 6-4. To wrap things up, Myers beat out Komar 6-2, 6-2 on court six and freshman Elena Molla defeated Chavez 6-2, 6-2 on court five.

The Kentucky women’s tennis squad now moves to 2-0 on the season. They look forward to their next matches this upcoming weekend, hosted by Duke Jan. 30 & 31. The Wildcats will take on the Blue Devils Friday at 5 p.m. and then face JMU at 11 a.m. and Queens (NC) at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
